Norwegian Breakaway Sailing from U.K.

| Monday, 29 Apr. 2013

Norwegian Breakaway will have an extensive waterpark The latest news is that Norwegian Breakaway set sail from Southampton, England, with passengers for the first time on Friday, April 26. We are hoping to see pictures of the inyerior verys oon, but so far Norwegian public relations is keeping the ship under wraps as much as possible until the first media cruises. There will be an informal inaugural ceremony held for the Waterpak on the top deck in the Southampton harbor on Tuesday, April 30, to mark her first sailing from there, but the official naming ceremony is still set for New York City on May 8th.

The Southampton ceremony will feature Paralympian Ellie Simmonds as its "Godmother." Norwegian Breakaway has the first water park with the fastest waterslide at sea. The Aqua Park on the 4,000 capacity cruise ship will feature five full-size water slides, including twin free fall slides - the first ever at sea - and a three-story sports complex.

The 18-year-old Simmonds from Walsall, England, won two golds as well as a silver and a bronze at London 2012, will officially open the Aqua Park and become the first person in in the UK to swim in the pool, while she will also be meeting with guests and experience the new ship. She will be joined by Olympic swimmer Chris Cook, representing Breakaway's charity partner Just a Drop, who champions clean, safe water in communities throughout the world.

"I am so excited to be involved with the launch of Norwegian Breakaway and support the Breakaway Water Project," said Simmonds. "As a swimmer, I love being around water and the way that the ship has been designed gives such a great sense of place. I also can't wait to see the ocean facing Waterfront and five slide Aqua Park - the biggest at sea."

After the ceremony, Breakaway will set sail to arrive in New York City in time for its May 8, 2013, (offical) christening ceremony in New York City Harbor with the Rockettes of Radio City Music Hall servings as the ship's Godmother(s).

Not only will the Rockettes christen the ship, but the glorious gals of Broadway will also be honored with a historical retrospective showcase in the ship's library. On select sailings, guests will have the exclusive opportunity to meet two of the Rockettes; some of them will be sailing on the first six cruises from New York, and upon the first cruise of every month. Two Rockettes will be offering special fitness classes, photo opportunities, meet and greet speaker series and more.

The reason the Rockettes are featured so prominently is that Norwegian Breakaway is being positioned by the cruise line as "New York's ship," according the CEO Kevin Sheehan who grew up in the city. Cruises aboard the ship have already been on sale for sevaral months, although we have not yet had a chance to see her beyond a floorplan and several designer drawings at the Norwegian web site depicting how she will look. But we do know she will be 144,000-gross tons and have 4000 passenger berths. One thing that makes her very unique is a close connection to the sea from an outdoor area is called "The Waterfront" along Deck Eight, actually one deck above the Promenade deck, where a number of restaurants have "al fresco" seating.

You can take a stroll outside along The Waterfront to gaze at the horizon on the sea. You can also get an unfettered "outside looking in" approach to people watching at a variety of restaurants and lounges. Some of restaurants with Waterfront access include the "Moderno Churrascaria" Brazilian grill, Cagney's Steakhouse and a new restaurant for Norwegian, "Ocean Blue" which will be designed and operated under the guidance of celebrity chef Geoffrey Zakarian.

Zakarian may not be a household name but he is certainly highly recognized in the culinary world, having already received a Michelin star for his New York-based restaurants, one named "Town" and the other named "Country." Zakarian is scheduled to board the ship when it arrives in New York City - but word is out that the raw oyster bar is already open on board.

After dining under the stars you can pay homage to another class of celestial bodies; rock stars. The new ship has the Broadway hit "Rock of Ages" as its entertainment focal point in the state-of-the-art Breakaway Theater. If so you see the unifying theme of New York City.

The ship will sail out of New York year round starting next May, sailing seven-day round trip cruises to Bermuda (starting April 30, 2013 through October 6th), followed by seven day cruises to the Bahamas and Port Canaveral Florida (giving New Yorkers an easy way to see Orlando) starting October 13, 2013, through April of 2014. Also included are two 12-day sailings to the Southern Caribbean calling at San Juan (Puerto Rico), St Thomas, St Martin, St Lucia, Barbados and St Kitts (sailing January 5th and January 19th, 2014). These two cruises are rotated with two-day cruises to nowhere on January 17 and the 31st.
