Ship will become Bud Light Hotel for Superbowl and feature Foo Fighters
Norwegian Cruise Line has taken center stage in New York City a few times now. When the brand new Norwegian Epic arrived in the city in 2010 the vessel was used to launch the annual Fourth of July Fireworks celebration on the Hudson River. That annual event, sponsored by Macy’s, has been a New York Tradition since 1958, but until 2009 was always held on the East River so Brooklynites could also enjoy the show. But it was moved to the Hudson River to honor Henry Hudson, who first navigated the river in 1609, and there the fireworks display has remained.
This year a different brand new Norwegian ship will be in the spotlight for an event on the Hudson River, Norwegian Getaway, the brand new sister cruise ship to the Norwegian Breakaway, will serve as the official Bud Light Super Bowl Hotel from January 30 through February 2nd beginning the day it arrives in New York. The ship will be docked at the infamous Pier 88 in Manhattan.
The Norwegian Getaway has 1,900 staterooms and can hold 4,000 guests. The 2014 Super Bowl will be held on Feb. 2 on New Jersey’s Meadowlands at MetLife on the other side of the Hudson River from the cruise port. Bud Light traditionally rents out hotels in the hosting city, but this is the first time it has chartered a cruise ship for the event. But in fact, cruise ships are excellent for such purposes since the housing, dining facilities and even entertainment venues are already all on the premises and fully outfitted to serve large groups.
But most exciting for bragging rights, one of the biggest rock bands in the world today, the Foo Fighters, will be performing for the Bud Light crowd staying on Norwegian Getaway the night before the Super Bowl. The ship will be docked on the West Side Manhattan pier next to the Intrepid Museum. Bud Light will construct a heated concert venue to be called the Bud Light Hotel Amphitheatre across the street from the Intrepid to host the concert and other parties.
It is just a little ironic that it is Getaway’s sister ship, Norwegian Breakaway, which arrived in New York about a year ago, that has the official designation as “New York’s Ship.” Breakaway sails out of New York year round to Florida and the Bahamas. But Breakaway was already booked that week with a regular cruise, and so the honor went to the brand new ship, Norwegian Getaway. Getaway will sail from Rotterdam on January 10th and arrive in New York for the first time on January 30, just in time for this event.
In fact, this event also caused some disruption to the launch schedule for Getaway. Many passengers had already booked passage on the trans-Atlantic voyage originally scheduled for earlier in January. Their reservations were transferred to a later date and they received on board credit.
Prior to the Foo Fighters show, the Grammy Award-winning band The Roots will be performing in the same amphitheater with Busta Rhymes and Run DMC on Jan. 30. The following day alternative-rock band Imagine Dragons will take over the stage. Then the Foo Fighters will headline the main event on February 1st, the night before the Super Bowl and the Zac Brown Band will follow.
This year’s Super Bowl will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. on Feb. 2. Fall Out Boy and country singer Jake Owen will be warming up the fans on game day, aboard the party boat.
Unfortunately – you can’t book a room on Getaway for this event. Most of the guests are prize winners in a massive giveaway contest held by Bud Light. The rest of the guests will be Norwegian and Budweiser company executives.
