Silversea Musical Themes Cruises

Written by: Paul Motter

We are seeing an especially pleasing new trend in cruising, an invigorated focus on special interest cruises with featured speakers and entertainers adding a social element to cruises by interacting with passengers. Whatever your interests are, from the music of the 1960s to new millennium politics, you can find a special interest cruise for you.

We have extolled the benefits of musical concerts on cruises many times before. If you have not yet tried a music-themed cruise we repeat that you don’t know what you are missing. By the same token, sometimes the best parts of a music cruise are the interview sessions where artists speak to the audience, something you rarely get to see in a concert.

Luxury line Silversea Cruises will present a series of seven musical-themed cruises in the British Isles and the Mediterranean this summer and fall that we find especially compelling. There are cruises for fans of jazz, Broadway, the Beatles or Opera.

In the British Isles they appropriately present “A Tribute to the Beatles” to be hosted by Joe Johnson, creator of the “Beatles Brunch” radio show heard in over 100 markets across the U.S. and Canada. The Beatles tribute band, The Bootleg Beatles, will perform a full-length Beatles show. Tony Bramwell, author of “Magical Mystery Tours: My Life with the Beatles,” will share his personal experiences as the Beatles’ personal assistant.

The Beatles cruise will take place on Silver Cloud, August 26 – September 5, London to
London, 10 days. Destinations include Edinburgh, Invergordon, Oban, Dublin, Cork and Fowey. Fares start at $7,486.

Another 60’s music cruise will feature the beautiful Michelle Phillips from the singing group The Mamas and the Papas. The group had hits with “California Dreaming” and also featured Scott McKenzie, who sang “San Francisco” with the line, “be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.” Michelle was married to songwriter John Phillips during the famous in San Francisco music scene and shares a powerful personal story.

In addition to colorful memories from that era, Michelle has a successful career as an actress in Hollywood. That cruise is on Silver Wind, October 30 – November 9, Rome to Athens, 10 days. Destinations include Naples, Corfu, Dubrovnik, Crete, Rhodes, Kusadasi and Mykonos. Fares start at $4,897.

Another Silversea music cruise features the London Festival Opera’s most talented soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, baritone and pianist. These accomplished musicians have performed for the Queen of England and other members of the British royal family. They will offer Silversea guests a special show entitled “A Night at the Opera” and will serenade in the ship’s dining venues The Restaurant and La Terrazza.

The London Festival Opera cruise will be on Silver Wind, May 28 – June 6, Monte Carlo to
Athens, 9 days. Destinations include Livorno, Sorrento, Crete, Rhodes, Marmaris, Kusadasi and Santorini. Early Booking Incentive fares start at $7,305. They will also appear on Silver Wind, July 28 – August 7, Monte Carlo to Rome, 10 days. Destinations include Portofino, Livorno, Barcelona, Ibiza, Palma de Mallorca and Corsica. Silver Sailing fares start at $5,147.

There will be a 7-day cruise devoted to Cole Porter and another 7-day cruise devoted to Noel Coward. Both programs are written and narrated by lecturer and historian David Garrard Lowe with songs performed by singer/pianist Bobby Nesbitt.

“Cole Porter — He’s the Top” will be on Silver Whisper, August 1- 8, Venice to Rome, 7
days. Destinations include Zadar, Kotor, Sicily and Lipari. Silver Sailing fares start at $4,197.

“An Evening with Noel Coward” will be on Silver Whisper, August 8 – 15, Rome to Monte Carlo visiting Sorrento, Livorno, Menton and Cassis. Silver Sailing fares start at $3,497.

For jazz music afficionados, see rising star Loston Harris, a pianist with the Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra led by Wynton Marsalis. Harris also appeared on the PBS special “Portraits in Blue.” Harris will be showcased aboard Silver Whisper, August 22 – 29, Barcelona to Rome, 7 days. Destinations include Alicante, Malaga, Monte Carlo and Portofino. Silver Sailing fares start at $4,197.
