What’s Holland America Up To These Days?

Written by:

It’s been several years since I’ve sailed on a “dam” ship. So now it’s time to check back in with HAL after their Signature of Excellence upgrades have been completed, and they’re just about ready to sail out the newest addition to the fleet, the Nieuw Amsterdam.
I’ve been on a voluntary hiatus from cruising for just over a year. Admittedly most people would be more than satisfied with taking one cruise every year, but as a cruise travel writer, even though I’ve watched the industry developments pretty closely, it’s difficult to keep my commentary current without actually setting foot on a cruise ship.
I did attend SeaTrade- The Miami Shipping Conference, in Miami in March of this year to attempt to “keep my finger on the pulse of the industry”, but with the constant changes within the industry, that doesn’t compare to cruising, and physically experiencing the changes that have occurred.
Sunday, May 9, that will all change, amd I’ll be back to cruising, when I board HAL’s Veendam to sail out of New York City on a seven day cruise to Bermuda (I last sailed the Veendam in 1998) Following quickly after that cruise, on July 2, I’ll be flying to Venice, Italy where I’ll be privileged to join the officers and crew of the Nieuw Amsterdam at the shipyard, and sail her out of the shipyard , and in to Venice, where the naming ceremony will be held, and will remain onboard for her inaugural sailing to Dubrovnik, Croatia.
In essence, for the next two months I’ll be your “HAL Guy”! As well as experiencing these two Holland America ships, I’ll be meeting with representatives of the cruise line, and hope to be reporting on “everything HAL” that may be of interest to you.
From the Veendam, beginning May 9, I’ll be writing a live, daily, Virtual Cruise Report for CruiseMates. This cruise is an accompanied Press Trip, meaning that aside from other journalists, we’ll be sailing with representatives of Holland America. Not only will I discuss the ship, the cruise and the Bermuda itinerary on a daily basis; I’ll also have the opportunity to respond to any questions you may have about the Veendam and the Bermuda itinerary, but also any questions you may want to ask of the cruise line. Upon my return I will also update the CruiseMates review of the Veendam.

You can either post any questions you may have here on the Blog, or on the CruiseMates message boards, in our Holland America forum, where I’ll be posting my daily reports.

After returning home and getting the laundry done, and repacked, I’ll be flying to Venice on July 2 (arriving to the shipyard July 3) and start the process over again. This time including pictures and video of the pomp and circumstance, and beauty, which will no doubt be a part of naming a new ship in a city as beautiful as Venice, Italy.

I invite you to cruise along with me via my Virtual Cruise Report, and post any questions that you have, or which may arise during my 2  HAL Adventures.
