Actually the term 'redneck' comes from the habit of early American colonist wearing wigs. The good wigs were made of either human hair or horse hair. The cheap wigs were made of goat hair. The goat hair wigs were very rough and left a red rash on the back of the neck, a redneck. It actually meant a person of meager means, not a crude or uncivilised person. Nascar fans may be universally crude or uncivilised but would not be caught dead in a goat hair wig!
