I would not spend money on a private tour of Skagway since all of the town's attractions are quite accessible on foot.
>> Whatever else you do, be sure to book a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Route (YP&YR)
. The scenery from the train is absolutely spectacular! If you book this through the ship's shore excursion desk, the train will depart from and return to the pier. If you book it on your own, the train will depart from and return to the railroad station next to the historic district.
>> There's a show set in the town's "gold rush" era at the Eagles' Hall called "Days of '98 Revue Starring Soapy Smith" that's outstanding. When cruise ships are in town, it has both morning and afternoon performances.
>> There's an outstanding walking tour called "Ghosts and Good-time Girls" about the shady side of the town's past that's also very worthwhile. It's operated by the Red Dog Saloon, a pub with a historic brothel upstairs where the tour ends.
>> The town's historic district has a lot of shops that sell a good selection of souvenirs and necessaries at reasonable prices, along with some restaurants and ice cream shops.
