We haven't been to LA yet, but we're booked at the Doubletree, San Pedro, for our next cruise (we're staying 2 days pre-cruise). I've also heard good things about the Crown Plaza, San Pedro.
I'd suggest you check the major hotel booking sites to see the reviews. Since you get in so late it might be better to book an airport hotel that has a shuttle from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the pier.
