The "formal" evenings are almost always the second evening (Captain's "Welcome Aboard") and the next to last evening (Captain's "Farewell"). Ships deviate from this only if they are in port into the evening on an evening that normally would be a "formal" evening.

On a cruise that's long enough to have a third "formal" evening, it usually falls on either a day at sea or a day when the ship leaves port early that's about midway between the first and last "formal" evenings.

Norm.
