I would say it would work if it is a "Sunday best" dress that can be worn to a restaurant that has a dressy, but not formal code. Think, if you can wear it to wedding, anniversary dinner at a fancy/elegant restaurant, a dressy office party, or a garden party then you will be fine.

Me, well, on elegant night I tend to wear my best dress pants (which I wear for work) and a nice dressy top that would work for a job interview or a wedding/anniversary party...
