Default Visiting Roma and Firenze

With the port of calls in Italy ... to see Rome and Florence... it "seems" inexpensive to do the train from Civitavecchia and Livorno to the central stations in Rome and Florence ... and then say do hop on/off tours in those cities or walking tours.

Has any got advice on taking rail from the port cities to these two cities ... I know the fare is inexpensive, but is it practical and worth the savings?

Thoughts?
