There are 38 slots on the wheel: red and black numbers 1 thru 36, and the green 0 and 00. ( Some casinos have wheels with 37 slots and only one 0, but not on cruise ships.) The payoff is based on the number 36. If you bet on N numbers, the payoff is:

36/N 1

For instance: betting on 18 numbers pays 1 to 1 (even money) , while betting on one number pays 35 to 1.

You can bet on 1,2,3,4,5,6,12, or 18 numbers. All of these divide evenly into 36 EXCEPT 5.

36/5 1 = 6.2

Therefore, in theory the 5 number bet should pay 6.2 to 1. However, the casino will round down and pay only 6 to 1. That is why the 5 number bet should be avoided.
