I'm never comfortable landing in a country without currency. I think the answer to your question would depend on where you live. Here in Vancouver I have a fantastic exchange place that doesn't charge a fee and their exchange rates are soooo much better than a bank. I buy Euros every pay when I know we're going on a trip and then use an ATM when needed in Europe. Check some of the currency exchange rate places if you live in a big city.
