Kat another theory about Portuguese names in the Carbbean was that Columbus named them in Portuguese instead of Castilian ( what we call Spanish). Columbus lived in Portugal for many years and the house where he lived in Porto Santo (part of the Madeira archipelago) still exists. It is now a museum.
