It is still against the law for a US citizen to travel to Cuba for commercial reasons (including leisure travel) without prior permission of the US State Department. The US government recently relaxed the rules to allow citizens and residents of the US with relatives in Cuba to travel to Cuba for personal reasons.

Even if you tried to go through Canada or somewhere else, when you did return to the US with a Cuba stamp in your passport, you'd get in some trouble with US Border Control.
