When we cruised Silversea we had several cocktail parties in the suite, both the Captain and Hotel Manager attended, though I didn't specifically invite them. I guess they come without special invitation if they like you

Fact is Marc, the vast majority of the cruise industry passengers do not cruise on the luxe lines, which means they are sailing on larger ships, with much less chance to meet and have a conversation with the Captain and Senior Officers.

While there are some free drinks and perhaps some appetizers, I think people also attend for the opportunity to socialize with other passengers they meet at these events.
