Don't count on any upgrades on your cruise. Generally,
all cruises these days, especially Alaskan, are full. I agree with the other's about layering your clothes. We cruised to Alaska in May a couple of years ago and the weather was incredible! We never needed even a light jacket. (Your mileage may vary
!)
I also agree that a balcony is great if you can swing it! Otherwise be sure to be on deck as often as possible.
