Default Cell Phone Use in Alaska

Okay, I know this is going to be a hard question to answer since it is so specific to carriers, phones, area, etc.... BUT i have to try!

Does anyone know if I will be able to use my Cell Phone in port on my upcoming cruise? We'll be visiting Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan. I have the most recent Sprint Android phone. On the coverage map, it shows it is an Off-Network Roaming. My plan includes roaming so I am not worried about the cost, just wondering if I will get a strong enough signal to call home and check in. Anyone out there have Sprint and been to those ports?

If not, since they are US ports, would a regular calling card be a good idea? I don't need to call home daily, but want to at least check in and talk to my kids a couple times. The kids can't read my emails yet, only Grandma.
