Well then, I have no idea who would have ever advised you take your passport ashore with you in the caribbean.
I carry a copy of the "pertinent page" in my wallet, but only to help, it's in no way an official document.
Coming back on board, in some ports they do have gates to get through at the pier. Some islands they will just accept your shipcard, others will ask for ship card and photo id. NONE will ask for your passport.
If you were to get "stuck" in one of those ports of call for some reason, missing the ship...you'd definately want to have your ID with you.
