Default Becoming a musician

Hey everyone

I'm here looking for a bit of advice. I am a second year music student focusing on jazz performance on drum set. Lately Ive been considering taking a year off after this year. The program is pretty intense and I want to get placed in better ensembles. My question is how good do you have to be to be the drummer for a band? Ive read a lot of things that say you gotta know a bunch of styles and how to site read but theres never an audio example. Sure I can sight read and play multiple styles but certain styles ie. Latin, are a bit harder than others. I feel like working on a cruiseship would be a great experience and make me a better player. Also I would be able to put the money towards this massive debt that I'm accumulating.

Also, should I go through a talent agency or straight to a cruise line?

Is it best for me to have a website and portfolio before applying?

Again I really wanna know what level players get on.

Thank you. Any advice is appreciated.
