Hi Bob,
Just sailed on the Dawn to Isla Margarita. It was a wonderful surprise, as the island is rich in history and culture. When we were there (2 weeks ago) the Dawn docked at the pier in El Guamache (a good distance from Porlamar). We walked right off the ship to awaiting buses for our "Historic Margarita & Porlamar Excursion", which is very well done. It is a half day bus tour with little walking involved, you will visit the beautiful pink church of the Virgin of the Valley and walk through the home of Santiago Marino in El Valle. The next stop is the capital of La Asuncion where you can stroll the main square. The most walking will involve only a few steps up the Fort of Santa Rosa which offers wonderful views of the valley and surrounding mountains. There will be a brief shopping and bathroom stop - beware of the Coco Loco - a fresh coconut and rum drink which must be an acquired taste!! We had no idea of what to expect from this port and it turned out to be one of our favorites.
Hope this helps.
