Default Re: MSC orders a new ship

It seems you may have to take that cruise on something a little bigger!! From this news report it looks like MSC is looking at two new cruise ships, maybe one each built at Chantiers de l'Atlantique and Fincantieri. Either way, there are going to challenge Carnival/Costa pretty soon.

MSC Cruises to take on Costa
24 February, 2004

MSC Crociere Italiane, the cruise shipping subsidiary of the Aponte group, is soon to place an order for two 100,000gt vessels with 1,350 staterooms. “Their 22.5kt speed will give us new itineraries in the Mediterranean with fresh ports of call,” the company’s new chief executive, Pierfrancesco Vago, told Fairplay in the first public interview since his appointment. Vago, 42-year-old head of a family-owned freight forwarding business, married Gianluigi Aponte’s daughter Alexa last year.

“We need the newbuildings to be delivered by 2006, which means the order will be placed in the next few months. At the moment we are negotiating with Fincantieri and Alstom,” he said. The aim is compete head-to-head with Carnival Corp’s Italian subsidiary Costa Crociere, which has 16,000 berths capacity. The new ships will be consistent with MSC’s “sober but very elegant” style, and Vago is confident they will meet the US Public Health System’s strict ratings.

In June Alstom will deliver MSC Opera, a sister to MSC Lirica, which left the yard in spring last year. Besides Vago, the company’s directors are chairman Nicola Coccia, Franco Zuccarino and Giacomo Costa. Domenico Pellegrino is general manager with Maurizio Amato as commercial manager.
