It was a nickname given to it by musicians in the thirties or forties. It made reference to the fact that if you got a job playing in New York, that was an important job.

I was born in NY and lived in the area all my life and, similar to most New Yorkers, never cared for calling it the Big Apple. We never use the term ourselves.
