This may sound a bit naive, but I enjoy the very self serving emotional lift I get when I can give a tip to someone who has offered me a service.
I do now (I did not previously) know that this is an American affectation. I learned it as a child watching my parents.
If giving a tip today expedites better service tomorrow---All the better.
