An Asian/South Pacific cruise is so much more expensive than even a European cruise - plus the flight costs are greater. Since this type of cruise is so much costlier, I think a smaller ship would be more likely to sail this type of itinerary with a greater occupancy rate than the new larger ship.

Perhaps, but apparently there's a lot of demand for those itineraries. Princess Cruises now deploys either MV Diamond Princess or MV Saphhire Princess (both 113,000 GTT and over 2600 passenges at double occupancy) to the Pacific Rim and to Austrailai and New Zealand every winter.
