If your cruise line offers it, do the "Champagne Catamaran Sailaway to St. John." A sail catamaran picks you up right at the cruise ship pier and takes you to a great secluded beach on St. John with a nice reef for snorkeling nearby, drops anchor, and lowers a ladder into the water for those who want to go swimming, snorkeling (gear provided), or onto the beach. While there, the crew sets out a nice buffet lunch aboard the catamaran. There's more time for swimming, snorkeling, or enjoying the beach after lunch, then the catamaran sets sail and returns to the cruise ship pier around 3:15 -- just in time for tea aboard the ship or, if you prefer, a visit to the shopping center next to the pier (which also has a post office where you can mail postcards if you want them to arrive before you return home) before the ship sails. Anyway, the crew on the catamaran also serves beverages of your choice -- champagne, mimosas, beer, sodas, rum punch, or fruit punch -- throughout the whole excursion. This excursion is not cheap, but it's well worth the price.

Norm.
