One quick fact that AFAIK is still true. Ships (and airplanes) have three degrees of motion. They are called Yaw (bow of the ship left to right), Pitch (bow of the ship up and down) and Roll(sides of the ship up and down). Stabilizers currently in use ONLY reduce Roll. Yaw is almost never a problem, but Pitch can also cause discomfort, as the ship rises and then slams back into the sea.
