According to the Juneau and Anchorage newspapers, a special election is to be held before the onset of the 200l cruise season for a $5 per cruise ship passenger tax. While in the past the residents of Ketchikan have opposed such a tax, I guess they witnessed the flow of income that Juneau recevies from their $5 per passenger tax "so what is good for the goose should be good for the gander." After the imposition of the $5 tax in Juneau it was felt there would be a drop in passegers but this did not happen for it is reported there was actually an increase.

I think this is also related to environmental issues. While Alaska wants and needs tourists, there is controversey over whether ships pollute the area or not. Royal Caribbean paid a $10 million fine for dumping and then trying to cover it up.
