Depending on where you want to go- I recommend going at least to Carcross with Emerald Lake 75 miles, the best of the scenery before turning back. Sourdough did have some vans- last year- so this may be a better option if you all want to travel together. There is NO possibility of getting lost or split up- only one road.
If you decide to go in 2 cars. As a side trip the drive 9 miles or part of to Dyea is scenic and goes by the Chilkoot trail head and Slide Cemetery- but NEVER go through any water covering the road- turn back- can be a bottomless pit.
Also a quick stop at the Gold Rush Cemetery and the short uphill hike to Reids Falls is worthwhile. Get all the history you can. As I have said in many posts before- go to the Park Service and see their museum- perhaps their movie and short walking tours, will REALLY enhance your later drive or train ride.
