Default car rental in Skagway

I noticed on another post that Kuki mentioned Sourdough rental and another poster mentioned Avis. I have looked Avis up and there is no Avis car rental in Skagway. Does anyone know how I can hook up with either rental agency. Also was it less expensive to do it by car? Did it take you all day?

I also found no Avis located in Skagway. In addition, I checked Sourdough car rental and nobody was in the office. I left a message but nobody ever responded. We are also looking into the same idea but are having trouble finding someone to rent a car with.

If you find anything out would you keep me informed. I have tried many different ways to find a rental agency in Skagway and am coming up with nothing.

I used Hertz rental co from Anchorage to Seward. I know that they are happy to rent one way between the two cities.

Please disregard the above message. I guess I was really out of it when I posted!

Avis is rented out of the Westmark and it is seasonal rental and closed from Sept- May. I have rented from them several times. Try the 1-800 number for Avis and not the web site.

Avis is rented from the Westmark hotel. Both the car rental and hotel are closed Sept - May. Try the national reservation number for Avis. This is where I have rented from , otherwise try Anchorage- this is where all their cars go off season. Perhaps they will have more information.

Sourdough is more expensive as they only allow 100 free miles with .30 cents per additional per mile- last years rates. Also expect to pay about $2 gal for gas.

Thanks I did. I did get a quote from them for a car in Skagway. I also informed them that the web site doesn't list Skagway, even though the lady at Avis gave me the code for Skagway. We are still looking into though as there will be 6 of us going and they only have cars available. Have to see.

Depending on where you want to go- I recommend going at least to Carcross with Emerald Lake 75 miles, the best of the scenery before turning back. Sourdough did have some vans- last year- so this may be a better option if you all want to travel together. There is NO possibility of getting lost or split up- only one road. If you decide to go in 2 cars. As a side trip the drive 9 miles or part of to Dyea is scenic and goes by the Chilkoot trail head and Slide Cemetery- but NEVER go through any water covering the road- turn back- can be a bottomless pit. Also a quick stop at the Gold Rush Cemetery and the short uphill hike to Reids Falls is worthwhile. Get all the history you can. As I have said in many posts before- go to the Park Service and see their museum- perhaps their movie and short walking tours, will REALLY enhance your later drive or train ride.
