My family of four (daughter 21, son 18) are going on an Alaskan cruise on July 9 on the Ocean Princess. Has anyone done the Tatoosh Islands Kayak Adventure or the George Inlet Mountain Bike tour? I have not found any information about either of these tours. Is there something better to do in Ketchikan? Also in Skagway, we are trying to decide between the White Pass Scenic Railway or the Klondike Bike Tour. I have read several negative messages about the railway trip (mainly that it is boring). Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Skagway- the only reason to take the train should be the history and scenery which is significant. If this is not of interest to you then you will be bored. The Klondike bike tour is about 20 miles downhill with some very steep areas and not bike paths. I did not enjoy this as I had a 10 year old daredevil rider with me. I do however enjoy biking around Skagway and Dyea. I never book the ship tours though and alway go direct.
The only benefit to booking with Princess, is you know the
ship will not leave without you. We just returned from our
cruise, and at our stop in Ketchikan, there was a gentleman
left behind. The ship was just pulling away when he came
running up. I assume he caught up with us in Juneau.
The Tatoosh Island Kayak is a nice trip. Lots of wildlife, we saw bear, eagles, sea lions, seals and good exercise. Very short and wet, it was raining, but well worth it. Make sure to take waterproof cameras (disposable) and leave the expensive stuff at home unless you want it splashed with salt water.
Biking in Skagway is also fun. The Dyea bike tour is very nice and pretty easy. However, the horseback ride covers the same ground. If I had to do it all over again, I would have rented bikes in downtown skagway and biked around town, out to dyea and up the pass a ways.
