Default ketchikan, juneau and Victoria BC shore trips

Hi. My hubby and I will be doing our first cruise in September. What are the favorite and most interesting shore excursions to take in Ketchikan, Juneau and Victoria, BC? Can I wait until we arrive to make arrangements on shore since it's in September and I'm guessing it won't be extremely crowded?...or should I contact the excursion groups ahead of time and make reservations? The ship departs at about 5:00pm in all ports. Thanks!!!

Judy:

We sailed the Infinity in May and had a great time. We didn't book alot of shore excursions since the weather wasn't all that great. In Juneau we did the helicopter to the top of Mendenhall Glacier and it was a great trip...little pricey $297 each.
In Ketchikan it rained all day, cold and miserable. On Vancouver Island (Victoria) we did the Butchart Garden which is inexpensive, beautiful and gorgeous.

Enjoy the trip.

I recommend a glacier helicopter landing out of Juneau via Coastal for $169, Victoria- consider an orca watch from an independent company on the inner harbor- you need to book this in advance, or Butchard Gardens can be gotten to via city bus from Douglas St. -behind the Empress a couple blocks up across from the MacDonalds. 1/2 the price of the tour buses. You don't say when in Sept you are going. But the cruise season does not end until the end of Sept so the ports will still be loaded with ship passengers. If going early Sept. bear watching out of Ketchikan is excellent- but second to the glacier landing. Again book direct. I never take any ship tours and always book my own.

We just got back from the Glacier Bay tour on the NCL Wind - we booked the Chilkoot Eagle Float Trip, Mendenhall Glacier Helicopter Tour($180 per person on board the ship), and the whale watching float trip all were booked on board and were within 10$ of what we could have booked for on land but were transferred to the trip site and didn't have to worry about getting back to the ship on time - some who took trips not associated with the cruise line had to get to the excursion departure area at an additional cost to them. The weather was fantastic - it only rained one morning when we were at sea. You will love your trip and love cruising - this was the first for all 8 of us who went and we can't wait to do it again. sandra

This is not true, I don't know of any of the above trips by independents that DO NOT include dock transfers with the price. The big advantage especially with the whale watching is 150 ship passengers vs max of 20 on the independents- also usually 30 mins longer whale watching. As for the helicopter I have gone with 3 Juneau companies and by far Coastal is the winner for their great personal tours! I have done the fight 6 times.
