Default Chilkat Eagle Preserve Float

We're on the Sun Princess 7/2 - looking for any info on the Chilkat Eagle Preserve Float Trip out of Skagway. Also, we have to make a choice between the flightseeing in Juneau or Ketchikan - any suggestions?

Laura,

I did the tour on the Sea Princess last month. I never did any rafting before, so it was fun, and we saw 3 eagles.

However....the rafting itself was at most an hour long. It took ~4 hours roundtrip to get there. 40 minutes by boat from Skagway-Haines, then by bus to the river. We did see a couple of whales, but since it's a ferry they didn't even slow down. The lunch was turkey/ham sandwiches, which were good.

The main reason I took this trip was to see eagles, what I didn't realize was you will see them anyways. In Juneau there was 6-8 in the hillside next to where the ship docks. From what I found out later, hundreds of eagles congregate at Chilkat in the winter, in the summer they spread out over Alaska. Only a few stay at Chilkat during the summer.

If you want to enjoy the outdoors, do the trip. If all you want to do is see eagles, don't.

I had fun and don't regret doing this, but it is pricey and takes too much time.

We just returned from our cruise, and we did the flightseeing
over Misty Fjord in Ketchikan. It was so beautiful. The
scenery is so magnificent. We landed on a lake and were
able to get out on the platoons to take some pictures. I
would highly recommend this excursion.

We did the Flight & Float which took us by plane from Skagway over the Glacier Bay landing in Haines. Then we were on a bus to the Chilkot River for the rafting trip down the river. It was very relaxing and we did see a lot of Eagles but they are quite far away, so bring binoculars and a telephoto lens. Our total tour was probably 6-7 hours, too including the flight. Do not to an airboat float on the Chilkot as the noise frightens the birds away.
Bon Voyage

This is totally not true. I have gone on the jet boat twice and birds were not the least bit affected. In the trees all over not making a move. It is best to do these trips mid Aug on, when the eagles start returning.

you are too early for any great numbers of eagles in Haines- I don't recommend going before mid August.

We did this trip last year and enjoed it greatly. When we went in July we saw many eagles and a bear. The scenery is spectacular. Try it.Karen wrote:

Thanks for all the info. We've decided to go on the raft trip even though we may see eagles in many other places. Counting the days…
