Default Royal Carribean or Princess for Alaska in 2002

My husband and I are very interested in going to Alaska in 2002 and would like opinions about which cruise line is better for Alaska, Princess or Alaska?. We are interested in doing both the land and cruise packages. We are in early 40s without children.

We love Royal Carribean cruising but have been told to use Princess for Alaska even by other loyal Royal fans. I have been reading about the Radiance for Royal Carribean and the new Princess Star and both sound like they would be great.

I have also been told that smaller is better for Alaska.

What are your thoughts? People on this board are so helpful and knowledgeable about cruising!

I have not done Royal Caribbean but have done Princess in Alaska. In fact I just got off a back to back cruise on the Dawn Princess in Alaska. Princess and Holland America have been in Alaska longer than any other cruise line. Princess has a great setup in Alaska. One advantage I did see in Princess over Royal Caribbean is Princess always docked at a pier. I did see Royal Caribbean tender people in at some ports. I believe Princess did a great job for us in Alaska and will use them again when I return to cruise Alaska and I will return.

We are using Royal in July of 2002. Our TA checked with Royal
about ships. We found out that the Legends of the Seas was going to be the ship that did the Alaska tours in 2002.

For me, my choice is first based on ports and glacier with Glacier Bay a preference and Sitka over Ketchikan. I would also encourage you to at least look into the option of touring interior Alaska on your own. You are able to see so much more and you have the flexablility of being on your own schedule. It is also significantly cheaper - if you choose basic lodgings. I have cruised 4 different lines to Alaska- and my preference would be to not consider RCI ships. For me it is vital I have a full front deck view for my endless time there marine wildlife watching. RCI have full front blue wind screens that severely infringe on this. In fairness few people do this and it would not matter to them. I also don't know if I could sail on them - again for their recent dumping.

We were told that the Princess package was best. A group of 36 of us took a 13 day cruise/land package in May. We booked through CruCon, which I have used before and were very satisfied.
