Anyone familiar with the Train and Camp Combo options in Skagway? Celebrity offers an excursion that takes you up White Pass on the train and then back down on a bus - stopping in a 'trail camp' where you get to pan for gold.
This sounds interesting to me - but would I be missing out on the train ride back down - and is the camp really just a tourist thing???
The train/bus is really the way to go. The train trip back is basically the same as the trip up, but on the bus you will get to have a few "photo op" stops. You'll be across the ravine from the train, so will be able to see the railway as well, which is pretty interesting. Also, some of the views onto that side of the mountain are really breathtaking and you would not be able to see them from the train itself.
Yes, the camp is mostly a tourist thing, kind of hokey, but it was really a lot of fun if you take it in the right spirit. It was interesting to pan for gold -- a bit harder than I thought it would be, but it was really a fun way to end the tour. You won't be disappointed if you do this excursion, especially if the weather is clear!
Liarsville is a recreated gold camp and yes is quite touristy, but enjoyable. This is a good combo tour. Just be sure to sit on the left side of the train if leaving from Skagway and the right if getting on in Frasier (facing the engine).
