There seems to be four or five nature cruises out of Seward, Kenai Fjords Tours, Renown Charters, Major Marine, and
Alaskan Catamaran Cruises. Can anyone suggest the best tour line and tour to take? We are taking the train out of Anchorage to Seward, and have an extra day before the cruise. Was wondering what would be the best cruise to take, we have two children ages 10 and 9.
Also, any opinions on the Aquatic Center in Seward?
My wife and I were very dissapointed in Kenai Fjords Tours. The crew was friendly but the whole tour they kept telling us of reports of wildlife in various areas but would not go to those areas. We spent a lot of time looking at rocks. The trip would not have been as bad if the Captain had not kept telling us where the wildlife was and than say "but we are not going there." We were fortunate to run into a pod of Killer whales on the way back to the dock and the Captain did stop for a little while so we could see the whales but overall we were very dissapointed.
I really don't know since I haven't been, but a book which was valuable for me on the Inside Passage Cruise speaks favorably of Mariah Tours because they don't pack as many people on the boat. Its a 43 ft boat with a maximum of 22 passengers. Some boats I guess take 100 passengers. Their phone # is 1-800-270-1238. Hopefully someone who has gone can give you better insight.
I have gone with both Kenai Fjords and Major Marine. It is important to consider the the 6 hour or longer tours for any chances of seeing wildlife. The shorter tours barely get out of the bay. I have seen whales, puffins, sea lions and eagles- on each of 4 trips. The Sea Life Center is not my interest as I prefer wildlife in the wild. The center is well displayed and would especially be of interest to your children. The seabird exhibit is especially interesting for the above and "below" viewing. Kids also would be interested in Seavey's sled dogs- fun ride.
