Was orginally booked on 9/14/01. Rescheduled for May. Same cabin. Can hardly wait. Will we be able to see whales and salmon running at that time of the year? What is the weather like in comparison to September? Would appreciate any feedback. Thank you
You definately made a good choice- Sept is NOT an ideal time to go especially as late as you had scheduled. (I was supposed to be on the spirit 9-12) Weather will be much better- 50-70 average. NO salmon runs but whale watching will be possible. for a sure thing take a tour out of Juneau - independent - through Orca Enterprises or Dolphin. about $100+ pp, It you are willing to invest the considerable time- I have always been greatly rewarded by spotting them from the cruise ship. Dress warm- knit hat and gloves with a good pair of WIDE angle binoculars. If interested post your route and I will tell you likely areas.
I was looking for you specific port times and route. Generally- several hours before and after- Juneau and Icy Strait (on the way to Glacier Bay) , last sailing day back to Vancouver from afternoon until dusk. earlier- likely humpbacks- dolphins, dolls porpoises, from early pm likely orcas- usually only consistant area to see them.
After reading this old post I would like to give you my info regarding my trip. Leave from SF CA 5/29, Juneau - 6/1 from 1 to 9 pm, Skagway - 6/2 7 to 7 pm, Tracy Arm - 63, Ketchikan - 6/4 7 to 5 pm, Victoria - 6/6 7 to 2 pm and SF 6/8. What chances do we have of seeing whales, where and what port is best? Your help is appreciated. Carole
