Have done the big-ship thing south in Carib. Small-ship cruising looks more intimate and less of a tourist shopping trap thing. Without mentioning the small-ship cruise lines I've uncovered...any recommendations? Wife's concern - what about heavy seas in inclement weather in summer - any problems?
I have a friend who works for Lindblad and it is indeed very desirable to me for the intense eco tourism based trips. But for me spending 5+times the cost is not in my plans. There is Cruise West, Safari, Glacier Bay tours. I would also look into Universe Explorer- more on line with "regular cruise rates" and Clipper. I have sailed Alaska 9 times and 3 hit very rough seas, so "the smooth as glass" myth is just that. You will get lots of reports of smooth trips but it is not a given. Bottom line -prevention is the necessary key. Consider bonine- over the counter, once a day. A trip here is no place to find out how the sailing will affect you. Once you are sick- it's over.
