We would love to go to Alaska for our anniversary in September, but it seems that the majority of the cruises are in the summer. Is September not a good month for Alaska? What is the best time to go there and why?
Hi Judy!
We're going for our third September Alaskan cruise this year. The last two times (including 2001) we were very lucky with the weather. If you search through previous posts (try using the word "September") you will see discussions on the subject.
I am a frequent Alaska traveler and I do not recommend any sailing past the first week of Sept. There are many reasons mainly the weather- as the month progresses the "bad weather factor" multiplies. It is more rainy, and worse of all dusk by 7pm. Yes people will rave about the shopping bargains, the "good" weather they encountered BUT having gone earlier - IT is far better sailing and wildlife viewing (SE Alaska salmon runs over mid Sept). I greatly prefer mid to late August. I have sailed Sept. 2 times (9-12-02 sailing canceled) as my second yearly trip and without exception everything was better earlier. If you do consider this time- #1 be sure to get greatly discounted cruising. I didn't pay over $500 inside, late booking. Frequently check for reductions. If getting a balcony- expect it to be cold and dress appropriately.
