We're considering the White Pass RR & Yukon combination excursion. We presume we'll be on a bus for the time not on the train. Exactly where does the bus go & what do we do along the way? Would appreciate any information...
The combo tour is one way by train to Frasier BC then bus return via the Klondike Highway, some buses go north to the Yukon, look closely at the description, but most return toward Skagway with photo stops and usually a stop at Liarsville, recreated gold camp- totally fake but fun. If taking the train one way BE sure - if getting on in Skagway sit on the left side of the train, if getting on in Frasier sit on the right side. BUT most important is a stop at the Park Service visitor center- free ranger talks, museum, movie and walking tours. Located at Broadway and Second. The best deal going!!!!
Everything Karen writes is "right on". There is another alternative
and that is to take the Whitepass RR on a round trip from
Skagway. Takes about 3 hrs, and if you take the morning run you
will have time in the afternoon to look around Skagway. The train
usually leaves right at the pier. Either trip will be great--Alaska is
a beautiful place.
My recommendation would be the same... don't miss the White Pass and Youcon RR.. but in the afternoon do the tour with the National Park Ranger.... It was really a great day... Alaska is awsome... but the smell of the pines on the train and the history of the town were highlights.!!!!
thanks for the info on the summitt train roundtrip at Skagway. We were wondering if it was worth spending the 3 hrs on the trainride. I'm sure the scenery is beautiful and hopefully, we can take the morning ride.....Anything else in skagway to do as we will be from the Princess Ship...
Skagway if filled with historical memories--most of the 98 gold
rush started in Skaway. The Natl Park Service has restored many
of the original buildings. An interesting old cemetery and lots of
curio shops. Makes an interesting afternoon after the train ride.
