I am planning a trip to Alaska this year and still have not booked it. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions as to what is the best time to go? Also, we really want to visit the interior and can't decide between three options...
1. Wrangel-Elias park area w/ a visit to Denali
2. Kenai penisula w/ a visit to Denali
3. Just visit Denali.
Whatever your choice, you might not want to wait too long before booking. My research has shown that land tour/cruise packages to Alaska during July and August are extremely popular this year and several have already sold out. If you have the resources to plan your own land portion, great deals are being offered for "cruise only" packages between Seward and Vancouver.
You choices greatly depend on how much time you have??? I am no fan of cruise tours and would never consider one again, I have independently traveled many times and extremely easy to do. BE very careful what your purchase and look closely at the descriptions, far too many spend more time in transit than at the actual area enjoying it. For ball park- times by bus Seward- Anchorage 3 hours, Anchorage- Denali Park 5+ hours, by rail 4 and 8 hours. Most important do not consider any Denali Park tour of "Natural History", you are greatly shortchanging yourself as this only goes 17 miles in, get the "tundra "tour 53 miles, you also are not likely to see any wildlife on the natural history tour. Just be an informed purchasers of any tour package. A lot of people have no idea what they are buying.
