We will be in arriving in Anchorage on the train after our cruise and land tour in July. We have the most part of an evening and the next day until around 5:00 pm to do whatever one should do and see in that amount of time in Anchorage? Any suggestions? We will be staying at The Courtyard Marriott which is about 1 mile from the airport. How far is it to the city area or will we be in the midst of things? Any info will help. Thanks!
Renting a car for a day would give you lots of flexibility and are pretty cheap in Anc. If you had a car or took a bus tour, you could drive down the Seward Highway as far as you had time to see. It is a very scenic highway with Turnagain Arm, Cook Inlet, Portage Glacier and the Chugach Mtns. The Alaska Native Heritage Center is also there and recommended by Frommers and AAA. Above Anc in the Mat-Su Valley, around Palmer are are the musk ox farm and several side road trips. There is also flight seeing out of Anc. The Visitor bureau there has a nice brochure they will send out.
We were in Alaska for 10 days, rented a car in Anchorage & drove Seward Highway to Portage Glacier. They have a sightseeing boat you can take over to the glacier (we were there in May & it was too early). The mountains are beautiful along the highway, with many waterfalls. There's also a wild animal farm nearby. Also a visit to Alyeska Ski Resort Hotel is interesting. They have many stuffed animals inside. An interesting place for dinner in Anchorage is the Sourdough Mining Co. They will come to your hotel, pick you up & take you back - giving you a nice tour of the city at the same time. We came back at 10:30, & it was still light.
Your hotel is several miles from downtown and I would also strongly encourage you to rent a car. I would skip Palmer but north- consider a stop to Eklutna spirt hours and take the short interesting tour, Eagle river nature center. Bike/hike the Coastal Trail?? , and most of all drive the Turnagain Arm to at least Girdwood, I can spend the day doing this.
How far is the Turnagain Arm from Anchorage and what is interesting there? Lots of sightseeing, could you explain a bit more. Is there a bus or shuttle that goes from our hotel to downtown Anchorage? We will be taking the Seward Highway after our cruise ends in Seward and heading to Denali National Park. We will be going from Seward to Talkeetna on a bus so having done this, would we be repeating what we have already seen by going to Turnagain Arm??
Turnagain Arm is south of Anchorage, and I recommend seeing the whole area until Girdwood- about 50 miles. Informative turn offs and very scenic. chance of Belugas. Riding by on a bus is not "touring" Turnagain Arm in my opinion and you would not be repeating if you choose to explore further. If not an interest a drive by bus ride may be enough?? A bus would never be an option for me.
