Marine wildlife is significant out of Juneau- Auke Bay for whales- mostly humpbacks. Bears on a costly flight to Pack Creek is the best, but my opinion is definately for the best of the best - a glacier helicopter landing via Coastal- they will also drop off and coordinate with Orca for better scheduling if you want to take both.
Dido - go with ORCA!! We had a awesome time, lots and lots of whales. Just got back Aug. 1st. We had a wonderful time!! Also we went to Mendenhall glacier. It is beautiful. We just took the bus from town there. 10.00 RT can stay as long as you like just catch the bus back whenever. There is a huge waterfall there, we walked right out to it. Can get right up close to it, even stuck my feet in for a second only!! Ha! Very cold. Great photo opportunities for both glacier and waterfall. Enjoy your trip!

We took the Orca Lodge whale watch tour & lunch excursion -- it could not have been better! We saw orcas and humpbacks, in addition to seals, seal lions, porpoises, and eagles. The boat is very comfortable, the crew knowledgable, and we came back with some great pictures.
What time did you take the ORCA whale trip? We are trying to decide between 330 and noon. Did you take any other trips in Juneau? It's a long day.

Our day in Juneau started with the tram. Eat somethnig on the ship before you go, because the restaraunt at the top is very slow and not very good. Very pretty hiking trails. We then took the 3:30 Orca trip. Saw lots of stuff, but were an hour late due to having to pick up people from Coastal helicopters whos tour ran late. Oh well, we did see whales and sea lions and eagles. After that, we had the driver drop us off at the Red Dog Saloon, which is a BLAST!
Juneau was my favorite port. We sailed on July 3, 2002, Carnival Spirit. We booked the Whale Watch and Wildlife Quest from our ship, and really enjoyed this excursion. We seen plenty of whales. We also did the Glacier Gardens tour. This was very interesting and beautiful, with a rainforest at the top of the mountain, and a garden at the bottom of the mountain. Both excursions were well worth the money and very enjoyable. I would recommend these. The tram, we did not go on as we ran out of time. People who did go on the tram said that it is a must when it is clear out and you can purchase tickets at port. They did a trail walk and actually saw a bear. They were very excited.

I always book my tours CAREFULLY, and always as close to docking as possible, this then leaves unobstructed blocks of time for other activities- you also have no way of missing the ship.
Karen,
Where can I find out about the Orca Lodge excursion? Is that the same as Orca Ent. with Captain Larry? We're going back in June next year and would like an alternative to Captain Larry.
How far from the port is the Mendenhall glacier center? I was just wondering if there was enough time between tours to go there. My husband and I were thinking of doing the ocra's in the morning, be back by noon and then doing the taku lodge flight seeing package at 2:40, so inbetween there I was wondering if we had time to go to the glacier? Thanks
Michelle
Could anyone tell me, on the Ocra whale excursions, do you get wet? I was wondering if bringing a digtal camera on board was a good idea, or should I just take a cheap water camera? Thanks
We caught a few pictures of the backs and tails. Usually we were just standing there with our mouths wide open in the awe of those beautiful animals, that we forgot about the camera! Next year I plan on being a little more concious of the camera.

It is about 13 miles, the MGT shuttle runs every hour, more often in peak, a cab would be the most efficient. There are also cabs lined up across from the visitor center for return. I don't think you have enough time in my opinion. Why not consider a downtown walking tour??? Consider the 2 musuems, a walk by the governor's house the cementery and even a longer walk to Last Chance Mining?? You could also fit in the tram if that was of interest?
