Has anyone taken the Mendenhall lake/glacier 12 person native canoe trip out of Juneau? How close to you get to the glacier? Would you recommend this over a trip to the Mendenhall glacier visitors center/salmon hatchery/salmon bake tour?
You do get close views of Mendenhall in the canoe and the 2 tours you have listed are quite different. If interested in the salmon, especially if going prime spawning the hatchery is worth a stop. The Mendenhall visitor center and viewing from land is excellent with full views.
I thought the canoe trip was THE best excursion I went on, and am going on it again this June. You do get very close to the glacier, and to icebergs in the water. You also stop near the glacier and right next to a waterfall on a tiny shore where they put out small refreshements (including smoked salmon). The visitor's center looked VERY far away. The people looked like specs.
