I have been looking into taking the Scenic White Pass tour...and I am getting mixed reviews on which is better...taking the more usual White Pass Train, or taking the smaller, more intimate bus tour. Can anyone recommend which of these is better? I have been told that you're not stuck to the strict schedule on the bus tour as you are with the train...and the guides are able to give you a more intimate experience because of the fewer people on board a bus. Any advice?
The narration on the train was a bit dry, but the scenery is lovely, probably better than you could get on the bus. I haven't taken the bus to White Pass but other tour busses in AK were a blast, very fun tour guides.
You are on a schedule no matter what you choose. If you are interested in scenery- superior from the train at the summit, history and engineering - take the train. Another option may be the rail/bus combos?
Request the Skagway visitor guide- I believe they are listed in there??? www.skagway.org head over to the cruise critic board- there is a resident from Carcross that is very informative about local operators.
NCL has a train/bus combo that I plan on taking. It's their Excursion code # SGY-057. You take the train up and ride the motorcoach back down with a stop at Gold Rush Trail Camp (among other places.)
I've heard from a number of people, including the Skagway Vistor's Center that this is one of the best tours in Skagway.
If you prefer to book direct, make sure it's well in advance. And I think the name of the company is simply, "White Pass & Yukon Route Railway". More information is available on their web page at: www.whitepassrailroad.com.
