My husband and I will be going to Alaska in June on HAL's ms Ryndam and we're looking for some input on choosing excursions since there are soooo many to choose from. Does anyone have any recommendation and/or have you successfully explored on your own and how? Our ports of call are Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau and Haines - leaving from Vancouver and docking in Anchorge. We like adventure rather than just sightseeing and would like to include one helicopter trip on our list of excursions but not certain which port would serve this best.
For clairfication- I'll assume you ship goes to Seward??? I have taken many many tours over all my trips. Most important is for you to look over a shore excursion list and narrow down your interests. Juneau and Skagway are best for glacier helicopter landings, Skagway best for glacier dogsledding. Juneau has the record for the glacier dog sledding being the most canceled of all Alaska excursions- my self twice. It would be my choice if you really want to do it.
