Im thinking of going on the white pass railroad but I read that it's 3 1/2 hrs long. And it says you can't get off the train, are you allowed to walk around on the train? I heard there is beautiful scenery but am wondering if Im going to be bored.

I was bored. Some people like it though. For me it was the least attractive Alaska tour.

We are going to AK in August. We are booked on the White Pass Railway also. Yes you can walk on the train. I am under the impression that it's not an adventure excursion, but it is VERY scenic and beautiful and you may have a change to see alot of wildlife. If you are into beautiful scenery and wildlife you will enjoy the trip.

No you don't get off the train UNLESS you are taking a one way train bus combo tour. A significant reason to consider the train is the scenery, engineering and mostly the history. I recommend the pm train if it is available to you- in port until 8pm. In the am get to the Park Service visitor center, all their free stuff will greatly enhance your later train trip. For clairfication- you AREN'T likely to see any wildlife. http://www.nps.gov/klgo/index.htm

Yes, you can walk on the train, you can even stand outside the car and really get a taste of the scenery and oh, the smell of the trees, its wonderful. It is on the long side, but well worth the scenery I thought.

We are thinking of going on a Train/Hike with Packer Expeditions. Anyone heard anything about them and whether it will be worth the extra $30 per person for a few hours of guided hiking (seems like a good deal to us!). We'll be there on July 1st.

Thanks,
Lorrie
