Default Fun areas in Vancouver convenient to Air and Seaport

Can anyone recommend the best areas to stay in Vancouver? Any hotel recommendations? And how far are they from the airport and seaport? Thanks!

Stanley Park is pretty near the dock. It has an aquarium, totem poles, and much more. It is about a $25 taxi ride from the airport though (as is the dock). We stayed at the Pan Pacific which is right on the Canada Place dock. It was very nice, but very expensive. We enjoyed it, but when we go back one day, and we will choose something less expensive.

I wouldn't stay near the airport. There are plenty of downtown Vancouver options of which would allow you easy touring of the city. Nothing out at the airport. Priceline has had some excellent deals, Days Inn although basic, is a great location if you want a sure thing on a budget.

There is also a Stanley Park free shuttle that stops at or near some of the hotels. It takes you directly to the horse-drawn carriage concession at the park (I loved this tour!)
Everything in the park is an easy walking distance from the concession.

We didn't spend the night in Vancouver, but we had an entire day to waste as our plane did not leave until 7pm. Since we had kids, we found a really nice large mall in Burnaby called MetroCentre. Aside from great shopping, it had a movie theatre. It was about 20 minutes from Canada Place, and then from Burnaby to the airport was about 30 minutes with traffic. It made the end of our trip enjoyable instead of spending the day at the airport.

We spent two and a half days in Vancouver before our cruise and were very happy with the Best Western Downtown (about $89 US per night). It was convenient to everything. For seeing Vancouver itself we took a Gray Line hop-on-hop-off bus tour (purchased at the tour desk of the nearby Holiday Inn) which got us to all the important places (Stanley Park, Aquarium, Chinatown, Gastown, Canada Place etc.). Then for Victoria we took a ferry and a rental car.

We'll be in Vancouver for 4 days before our cruise...we decided to stay away from the downtown area and chose the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites in North Vancouver. We will have a rental car; it's 20 minutes from the downtown area. We plan on going to Grousse Mountain, Capilnano Suspension Bridge, Whistler Mountain, etc as well as some sights downtown, so we felt this might be a better choice for us. Budget has a drop off site for the rental car right at Canada Place. Whatever you choose, am sure it will be great!!

We are treating ourselves to two nights at the Fairmont Waterfront since it is located right at Canada Place, where the ship leaves from. We will arrive tired on Wednesday night and felt that location, location, location was everything. We plan on going to Granville Island on Thurday morning and Gastown in the afternoon. That evening we plan on having dinner in Gastown. We are truly looking forward to this cruise!

Actually the Pan Pacific is at Canada Place the Fairmont is "next door". Granville Island is an excellent area to spend time in, one of my favorites.

We stayed one day prior and 4 days post cruise at the Hyatt Regency downtown, booked through priceline for 48 dollars US/night. Our kids loved Vancouver as did we. We got transit passes for $6.00 a day and traveled all over the city: Stanley park, science world, bloedel conservatory, van deusen gardens, UBC, Little India at main and 49th st, robson street for window shopping, granville island etc. Many many things to do for young and old. My kids especially liked the English garden maze at Van Deusen gardens. Public transportation is clean, fast, efficient and cheap. All downtown hotels are within walking distance of Canada Place, but if your ship sails from Ballyntine as ours did its a 5.00 cab ride. P.S. I'd personally skip gastown and chinatown, Touristy, same old same old, and very shady characters. Have fun.

We stayed at Canada Place at the Pan Pacific. It was expensive, but it was great, so it was worth it to us. The location can't be beat. You might try www.frommers.com. It has great walking tours for Vancouver. English Bay Beach at sunset cannot be beat!! We went to Stanley Park too and also took a (long) day excursion to Victoria to go whale watching and sightseeing. We also enjoyed Gastown and Chinatown, which are close to Canada Place. Have fun!

Dear luv2cruise,
We are staying at the Fairmont Waterfront because of location, location, location. You
get what you pay for! We will be tired after traveling from Virginia Beach, Virginia, to Washington, D.C. and from Washington, D.C. to Seattle, and from Seattle to Vancover. Being near Canada Place is convenient, safe, and worth every penny especially since we are flying free to Seattle with airmiles!
