Default Has anyone sailed on Mercury (Celebrity)? Planning first cru

Hi All - We are going to Alaska for the first time in August 2004 !!! We are thinking about sailing with Celebrity cruiseline aboard the Mercury for a 7 night round trip cruise porting out of Seattle. Has anyone sailed on this ship to Alaska? Or stopped at the following ports of call? Is this a good cruise for our first Alaska trip...Any advice would be appreciated!!
Ports of Call;
Juneau, Alaksa
Skagway, Alaska
Ketchikan, Alaska
Prince Rupert, B.C., Canada
Inside passage, Alaska (cruising)
Hubbard Glacier, Alaksa (1 hour)

I am also thinking of going on the Mercury in July. Rates are so high and we need airfare from the east coast. I know Celebrity is a good line and the food is great. I would like to find a good rate for a balcony cabin. Please respond if you know of a good deal - we are a party of 8 so we need 4 rooms and what time in July is good to go. Thanks.

We sailed the Mercury last August. You'll find she's a beautiful ship with a very friendly staff. This is a great cruise for your first Alaskan trip. I'm sure you will enjoy it.
I'm one of the "must have a balcony" cruisers as well. Especially in Alaska. The scenery is breathtaking and we spent many hours (on 3 cruises) sitting on the balcony and absorbing the beauty. So if you can afford it try the balcony.

All 3 towns are very small. Plenty of shopping.

Juneau: I'd reccommend Mendenhall Glacier. You can get a bus at the dock for about $10 each round trip. This visitor center is an extra charge.
Mt. Roberts tram leaves from the dock. A 10 second walk from the ships. If the weather's clear up there it's beautiful.
Of course you'll find many whale watch and city tour type trips as well.

Skagway: White Pass RR trip was awsome. I highly recommend it. We also took a mini-bus up the highway to the White Pass area. Not as scenic or nice but much cheaper that way. And still very nice and beautiful. The train has spurs that back up to the 3 main docks.

Ketchikan: The Duck tour was a lot of fun. You can walk to Creek street pretty easily. And go up the funicular and walk the switchback path back down. It's a nice stroll.

Note that all 3 of these towns are easy walking tours. So if you're in decent shape you can wander the towns and take in the atmosphere easily.

Hubbard Glacier is spectacular. It was cold in front of the glacier. It was calving a lot. The trip to the glacier is not in the inside passage any more so there's a chance of rougher seas.

On our trips we had some rain each time. Not too bad however. But remember that a good chunk of the trip is by the rain forest. Be prepared and it shouldn't spoil the trip at all. We had no trouble with it.

I highly suggest you find a cruise specialist agent. They will have better pricing and cabin locations. They will beat even if you book directly through Celebrity.

You'll find a few mentioned on these message boards.

I can recommend a couple and try to answer any other questions you have if you'd like to Email me directly.

I'm envious

Also consider the bargain finder site on this board. It got me the best price for my last Alaska cruise. Look over a shore excursion list and narrow down your interests, plenty to do in Alaska- go with what catches your eye, no matter the cost- excellent tours to be had!!.

I second what Peter said concerning Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway.
The White Pass Railroad was just great. I combined the trip with a stop at Liers'ville trail camp which was lots of fun with re-enactors playing goldseekers and ladies of the evening.
In Ketchikan, I did the cannery tour and did a walking tour on my own. Dolly's house on Creek Street was well worth a see. I have visted 23 countrys and most US states, and I found Ketchikan and Skagway 2 of the prettiest towns that I have visited. Most lovely setting for a state capital? Juneau!
Some swear by veranda balconys. Myself, I paid much less for an inside room and went to public viewing areas and saw plenty. As a matter of fact, I found that the ship's bow was the best place to see wildlife becouse of 3 directional viewing.
