what type of shoes should we wear?

What do you recommend as the best kind of shoes to wear while in port (late May)? We'll be doing whale watching, flightseeing, horseback riding, and some walking tours. Will sneakers be OK or would I be better off with my waterproof, insulated winter hiking-type boots?

We wore New Balance shoes in May last year and were comfortable. I did spray them with Scotch Guard but, since we had beautiful weather, it was wasted effort.

I recommend 2 pair of walking shoes that are water resistant. I have never taken hiking boots and walk usually 3+ miles in port.

We had brought some hiking shoes (low ones, not the boots) when we were in Alaska last August. We did some walking and hiking at a few of the ports, so they came in quite handy (especially with a few days of rain!). In Ketchikan we were pretty much staying in town as it was only a short time in port, so they really weren't needed then. It pretty much depends on what you feel most comfortable wearing. I agree about having 2 pairs of walking shoes with you; if you have weather for a few days as we did you'll be glad to have a change!! Have a great cruise!!

Sears now carries one of the most comfortable, budget minded, and colorful walking shoes- Land's End! They are also weatherproof.

We bought a couple pairs on sale here in Florida! Thrilled and looking forward to our first Alaskan trip. Per our friends, whom have cruised Alaska before- you just never know about weather- and nice to know that you have shoes that keep toes warm and DRY in case of seasonal rains...

Have a great trip.

VERY COMFORTABLE ONES. i wore tennis shoes and was fine. i did the whale watching, floatplane trip and white pass summit trip and gold panning. i did not need hiking shoes for these tours. and when i walked around the ports my feet were just fine. i with others about not breaking in you shoes before you go and scotch guarding is a good idea as linda said. . comfort is number one in alaska.

May has a wide range of weather. I have gone mid May myself. Again- you need a range of attire and no guarantees. :)
