We are thinking about trying to go to the Deer Mountain Hatchery on our own during our day in Ketchikan. Is it worth the walk/price? Do you know if the tours are on a set schedule or if they will just give you a tour when you show up?
The hatchery is a walk through no tours, informal information given. Easy walk from the dock, there are also combo tickets for about $10 with the Totem Heritage museum next door. A loop walk takes you up Park to the hatchery. Continue through the city park and head down Deermont. Gives you a close look at residental life. At the end turn right then you are back at Creek St. and in town. As for it being worthwhile??? Juneau's is much larger but this hatchery gives you a good look too with just a short walk. In season the creek along Park will be loaded with salmon.
