Has anyone had experiences with car rentals in either of these two areas? We are booked on the Sapphire Princess for 9/12 sailing and are considering renting in one or both locations. Mainly for the cost reasons but we also like to go off the beaten path a little. We like to explore the scenery not with a busload of other people. Any suggestions of companies and whether to do it or not would be greatly appreciated!!!
Look for the skagway drive to emerald lake thread or two on this board and you will see tons of people renting car from Avis or two local companies and taking scenic 150 mile round trip to this lake. There is also horseback riding there. Also on those thread is link to Yukon's (Murray's) mile by mile driving guide on what to see. Don't know about car rentals or roads in Juneau.
I've rented in both. The previous post has the Skagway information. In Juneau- determine WHAT your interests are??? With a car- you can drive to Mendenhall- good hiking and ranger activities, take a look at Chapel on the Lake, St. Theresa's Shrine, Glacier Gardens, the fish hatchery. But a car is NOT a good option for downtown touring- parking limitied and also consider other touring that provides dock transportation which are definately superior than driving around- whale watching, flights. Rent a Wreck picks up and will allow downtown drop off for an extra fee. A lot of the majors- DO NOT PROVIDE a shuttle so you are adding at least a $15 cab ride each way to the airport - plus the time. Verify DIRECTLY if a shuttle is available- conditions can change.
